Next Meeting: August 10, 2008 3:00pm @ Chez T/M (direx will be emailed!)
Meeting topics
Meeting 4:
*Recap of meeting 3, since it's been over a year (!!) since we've done this
*Planning for ongoing meetings -- increasing # of people coming to camp, what does everybody want to learn?; basic learning environment for camp attendees (i.e. bring your own laptop, have a server space where you can play)
*Drupal install?? (I'd like to do this and refresh the skills from a workshop I took in June -- could be a way of practicing shell commands we learned at meeting 3, Laura)
Meeting 3: working in the shell, beginning regular expresions, piping commands, configuring your preferences, changing permissions, installing applications (such as?? greenstone? DSpace? eprints?). I would like to learn this type of thing:
Through the hands-on exercises, the student will learn how to
uncompress and untar distributions, configure an application for
building, compile it, install it, configure it, and finally use it.
Applications used during these hands-on activities include: Apache (a
Web server), MARC::Record (a tool to read and writing MARC data),
MySQL (a relational database application), Perl (a scripting
language), zebra (an indexer/search engine), xsltproc (an XSLT
processor), and YAZ (a Z39.50 client). The hands-on exercises are
complete with sample data, configuration files, and sample scripts to
get the student up and going quickly.
This workshop is designed for the novice and moderately experienced
computer user. The only prerequisite skills are: 1) no fear of
command-line processing, and 2) the desire to learn. THIS WORKSHOP IS
NOT NECESSARILY DESIGNED FOR COMPUTER GEEKS. IT IS ABOUT TAKING
CONTROL OF YOUR COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT. To get a flavor for this
segment, see: http://infomotions.com/musings/ossnlibraries-workshop/
Meeting 2: Linux basics -- files, directories, command structure (command+arguments+flags), common commands for moving files around, shell navigation tips.
Meeting 1: Move equipment into Boneless Ranch. Testing your equipment. Installing RAM. Installing the Operating System.
******Availability: ****** Please indicate days and times you are available to meet to set up/work on this project:
Ivy: My days off are Sunday and Monday, so either of those days would be best for me.
Laura: M-F 7:30am-7:30pm doesn't work for me due to the day-gig, evenings and weekends are flexible. My ideal time would be Sunday afternoons/evenings or Monday evenings. I could pencil it into my work calendar as a professional development workshop and take a weekday if absolutely necessary.
Connie-Lynne: My weekday daytime schedule is very very flexible, but MWTh I skate 6:30 pm - 10 pm. Saturdays I skate 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, but could come any time after that (as long as I skip the post-skate sushi and booze). Sundays I'm generally free. For March, I'm free the fourth and the 18th, I think. I'm stage managing on the 11th and 25th, but can get a different SM if other folks have more urgent schedule conflicts.
Tawny: Sundays sound perfect. I am also free on Sundays. Late afternoon would good. Otherwise Friday after eight, or Saturday anytime.
Jim:** I can put almost anything in my schedule on T-F evenings and on weekends. My schedule tends to fill each week, though... so prior notice helps.
Tawny: Ok, I'm planning on starting this Sunday unless someone notified me otherwise.
T.J.: Sundays sound good, I am available most evenings as well for computer/site tweakings
